Benefits of switching to soy milk?
« on: August 10, 2010, 07:54:37 AM »
I've used cow milk, whole, in my coffee and cereal up until recently.  My friends only have soy milk at their house so I decided to give it a try.  Not bad!

My question is: what are the health benefits here?  Why should I make the full-time switch to soy?

Hi there
I recently switched as well as I have just found out I'm lactose intolerant. Didn't like it at first but now LOVE soy milk. Am not really sure of the health benefits. All I know is that I no longer get a puffed up belly from milk.  :)

Not sure about the health benefits of switching to soy milk full time, but it's great for overall well-being to have a balanced diet. some soy milk at least sometimes must be good for your health!

I read somewhere that we need to eat at least 37 different types of foods everyday to get all the nutrients we need. It sounds like a lot but when you start adding them up it makes sense (eg. If you had muesli with yoghurt, banana and soy milk for brekky, that's: oats, nuts (maybe 2 types), seeds (maybe two types), dried fruit (apricots and sultanas), fresh banana, yoghurt, honey, soy milk - there you go, you've had 11 already!.

Besides the extra protein and fiber, the biggest benefit in soy milk are the isoflavones. Sounds complex, but basically isoflavones are actually chemicals very similar to the hormone estrogen. Soy milk does have a bit more fat than 2% cow's milk, but none of the nasty cholesterol (of which there is approximately 20mg per cup, in 2% cow's milk).
An advice from an online chemist is well worth it.
