You have probably made it to this page because you are interested in leading a healthy and balanced lifestyle- the health diary could be just the perfect ingredient in helping you towards this goal.

It might seem daunting at first, but keeping a health diary is really worth all the effort.

By seeing exactly what you eat from day to day, you can quickly see what you can do to help improve your diet.

What's more, seeing what you eat and going through the process of filling out your health diary can help you manage any impulse eating, as you gain an understanding of what you usually have during the day. It helps you be more reflective of what you are eating, and might make you realise certain aspects of your eating habits, "Did I really need to cook with that much butter?"

Also taking note of what you've eaten can lead to little rewards and surprises. "Did I only eat that for lunch? Well, it looks like I can enjoy a little of Friday's after work nibbles guilt free!"

Keeping a health diary is easy. Just write down what you've eaten and make sure you cross off the glasses of water and there’s also room for you to jot down your physical activity.

If you are interested in finding out amount of fat, protein, carbs, fibre, and kilojoules/calories you've eaten, Google will point you to the hundreds of online calorie counters, such as calorieking.com.au. Or you could check the nutritional information on your food labels.

Remember, be honest in your diary, as you are doing it for yourself. Write everything down. It will be hard at first but think of the rewards! Keep your diary with you at all times. If you don't like what you're seeing, don't be too hard on yourself. Don't force yourself into instant and unrealistic results. Take it one day at a time. And when you've done well, be proud of yourself!
