My Health Tips
People who suspect they have lactose intolerance can have a breath test to assist with diagnosis http://shepherdworks.com.au/disease-information/hydrogen-breath-testing
People with symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome should ensure that coeliac disease has been investigated. http://shepherdworks.com.au/disease-information/coeliac-disease
Lactose Intolerance is due to a (temporary or permanent) reduction in the secretion of the enzyme, lactase, from the cells of the small intestine. Lactase enzyme breaks down the sugar that is present in milk called lactose. http://shepherdworks.com.au/disease-information/lactose-intolerance
People who are lactose intolerant have difficulty absorbing lactose, and usually experience symptoms of bloating, wind, abdominal cramping. Such people may also have similar symptoms after eating foods containing other poorly absorbed sugars. A low FODMAP Diet may help. http://shepherdworks.com.au/disease-information/low-fodmap-diet
